The mission

IMG_0157_600pxEpiscopal City Tutoring began with two ambitious goals: (1) provide the highest quality one-to-one tutoring in competitive markets, (2) use tuition payments from profitable tutoring centers to provide free tutoring in low-income neighborhoods. With help from Episcopal City Mission, we began our tutoring program as a partnership between urban and suburban churches. Our first tutoring sessions were held at Christ Church, Hamilton in August of 2010. In just a few short months, we had already tutored enough students in Hamilton to provide free tutoring for 4 families at St. Mary’s Church in Dorchester.

Our curriculum includes one-to-one tutoring programs for English, Writing, Biology, and Calculus, as well as personalized programs for standardized tests. Individual tutoring sessions are currently held at Christ Church, Hamilton and St. Mary’s Church, Dorchester. Our newest tutoring center will open at Church of the Redeemer, Chestnut Hill in February of 2011.

Scope and Sequence
There are 10 weeks of tutoring, and ten practice tests in the text. Students complete a practice test before coming to each class. They will begin with either Math or English for 90 minutes, and should complete both the Math and the English components of the Practice Test each week, which will take about 3 1/2 hours. If this is not manageable, students complete the portion of the test they will be tutored in that week, and come prepared to discuss their questions. Although we realize students have very busy schedules, we encourage them to complete the entire Practice Test each week in order to get the most out of their 1:1 tutoring experience. The tutors are eager to answer their questions and of course, if students have already completed the test they have a better chance of targeting areas of weakness. As the weeks pass, if a student is particularly challenged with one subject, we will accomodate him by focusing on that subject.

There is also a writing component to the SAT, where students are given 25 minutes to write an essay about a given topic. In order to be prepared for this somewhat daunting task, our students write a timed practice essay every week and receive specific feedback about how to improve their writing skills. Our students have found that after writing 10 timed essays and implementing the learned strategies, that this task is a breeze on the day of the test.
We provide healthy snacks, tea and coffee, and a supportive and friendly atmosphere. Students take a break when needed.
